Good for a walk during daylight hours; after dark however... Had some good times there 24/7... Even though it's like in the middle of a forest, you come across lots of pigs... Isn't that strange..?
Warren Lodge is in Thetford forest, near Mildenhall. If you like forest walks, the chance to get up close to wildlife and fresh air then this is a good place for it. It's a managed wood of non-native trees with good access, car parks and no other facilities as such, so no need to bring easily bored screaming kids who demand sweet refreshments, play areas and 'kids experiences'. Don't spoil it for the rest of us, take your litter home and leave nothing but memories.
Great little walk mostly on paths with forest on both sides.Spotted one bench along the 2 mile (3.15km) circular walk.Free car park for about 8 cars.About 1/2 mile down the track (counter clockwise) is the restored Warren Lodge.There had been a rabbit warren at the site since the 1300s, one of over twenty in medieval Breckland where rabbits were farmed in designated areas for their meat and their fur. This warren lodge is one of only two surviving medieval warren lodge buildings in Breckland, the other being Thetford Warren Lodge.I did not see one rabbit or hare, so I'm guessing they've been eliminated.If I have one criticism it is the state of the route markers. Several have succumbed to rotting and fallen over and now hidden by vegetation. I'm not sure a hunter green band on an untreated pole is the best choice. Best pleace for walk
A nice quiet wood with parking for a few vehicles. There are a number of benches along the walk (about two miles, although can be made a little shorter) including a picnic bench at the lodge. Some sections are gravelled where others are just worn grass trails. Lots of squirrels even on cold days, other wildlife spotted included a Muntjac in hiding.
